Plumeria, or Frangiplani, are
popular flowers used in LEIS
(garlands made of flowers, worn
around the neck and given for
special occasions such as
birthdays and graduations). The
flowers are worn in women's hair
and behind their ears to give a
natural perfume smell, an Island
tradition.
With 100's of variety of colors,
shapes and fragrances which make
them very pleasing to the eye as
well as the nose!
They are native to Hawaii, as well
as other Pacific Islands (likely
due to the warm, tropical
climate). Plumeria can be grown in
almost any region of the Unites
States with favorable outcomes.
Guarantee
In milder regions of the United
States, Plumeria should thrive and
do very well without too much
care, even being grown in the
ground. In colder regions,
plumeria should be grown in
containers and stored in a warm
area during times of freezing
temperatures.
Plumeria experience a "dormant"
period where the leaves fall off
and they do not bloom. But as soon
as the temperatures rise, you can
bring your plumeria out of storage
and they will resume their growing
as if nothing ever happened.
Expect your 1st Plumeria flowers
during the early summer months.
They will surprise you with their
grand colors and spectacular
fragrances! And the best part is
the blooming can last up to 3
months and it may produce flowers
everyday!
You can admire your Plumeria on
their branches or you can pick
them and use them for your own
Hawaiian Lei, or as a beautiful
centerpiece for a table! Plumeria
can last, once picked, without
wilting up to several days if kept
in some water. |
